Insignificance
In the big picture, our lives are insignificant. A hundred years after we move on from this world, no one will really remember us. And even if they do, it won’t have any material impact on their life.
Our lives matter only really in this moment and to the people we care about in this moment. Those are the only people who truly be impacted by our actions.
It’s sad in some ways — the idea of leaving a legacy may be a bit overrated. But once we get over this sadness, I believe it’s incredibly liberating.
There are no stakes. You don’t have to be anybody. All that matters is this moment.
If life isn’t serving us or the people we love in this moment, then we can, and should, change things. It puts us back in the driver’s seat and enables us to truly build a life that serves us in the now. Because that’s really all that matters.
Once we come to terms with our insignificance, it has an almost contradictory effect - it makes us enjoy each day as even more precious and finite.
