I know I’m a few days late but I want to talk about Valentine’s Day.
I find it kind of gross.
I actually love the spirit of the holiday - a reminder to express love to the people we care about. (Special shoutout to more inclusive, non-couple versions.)
The problem is Valentine’s Day doesn’t feel like it’s actually about love.
The holiday has been commercialized.
Every restaurant in NYC has a prix-fixe menu.
Roses cost $10 each.
Trader Joe’s is decked out with pink decor and heart-shaped chocolates for a month leading up to it.
All of this makes it feel like something I’m supposed to do versus something I want to do.
I’m out on that.
Love shouldn’t be commercialized.
And it extends to India where a totally western alien concept is now being amazingly “celebrated “ but of course targeted at the young!
